Toward Intelligent Reconfigurable Wireless Physical Layer (PHY)

Next-generation wireless networks are getting significant attention because they promise 10-factor enhancement in mobile broadband along with the potential to enable new heterogeneous services. Services include massive machine type communications desired for Industrial 4.0 ultra-reliable low latency services remote healthcare and vehicular communications. In this article, we present design of intelligent reconfigurable physical layer (PHY) bring these reality. First, implement PHY via a hardware-software co-design approach on system-on-chip consisting ARM processor field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The is then made by augmenting it online learning (OML) based decision-making algorithm. Such can learn environment (for example, channel) dynamically adapt transceivers' configuration (i.e., modulation scheme, word-length) select channel on-the-fly. Since unknown changes time, make OML architecture dynamic switch between various algorithms We have demonstrated functional correctness proposed different environments word-lengths. detailed throughput, latency, complexity analysis validate feasibility importance next-generation networks.
